Afternoons at the 2plus2 club

The 2plus2 club is unique in Paris. One of the oldest, this club libertin is open seven days a week, mornings and evenings, always for couples only. After 27 years at another Paris address, le 2plus2 has been at 9, bouevard Edgar Quinet in the 14th arrondissement for the last 10 years. Go up the stairs from Metro Edgar Quinet (line 6), turn left and cross the road. Walk towards the cemetry. The entrance has two trees ouside with lights on them.

This is a family club, management passing from parents to children. They have a straightforward policy which is very successful. Every afternoon, they open at 2.00 pm to welcome naughty Paris. Other clubs open at 4.00 pm and welcome single men.

The clientele is very mixed with a balance of older people who have been libertins for a long time but also enough attractive younger girls and boys. Most people are very experienced and full participation is virtually 100%.

Entering is typical for a Paris libertin club. Ring the bell, wait, the door opens, walk along a corridor into the ground floor of the club, leave everything at the reception - it’s safe - and you are given a number. The cost of the afternoon (53 euros a couple) including a free drink each - alcoholic or non-alcoholic.

The ground floor consists of a large bar, plenty of seating, a dance floor and a restaurant (evenings only). There are some private booths and a sealed area for smokers. Upstairs is where the action happens. The decoration in the style of a ‘maison close’ (brothel) is appropriate because this establishment was a ‘maison close’ in the Thirties called the ‘Sphinx’ whose clients included Henry Miller and Apollinaire. There are showers and towels are supplied. Condoms - ‘préservatifs’ (pray-serve-a-teefs) are available on request.

In the afternoons, le 2plus2 is naughty Paris. Most couples do not go home together. There are secretaries who go back to the office, women who arrive in trousers changing into slinky dresses brought in plastic bags, escorts who adore the scene and participate fully, managers from offices, arranged couples who drive 100 kilometres to Paris and back for pleasure and privacy, genuine couples who have been going for many years, the teacher whose husband cheated on her and everything else imaginable in total privacy.

Most couples arrive between 2.00 and 2.30 pm and leave between 5.00 and 5.30 pm. Some couples arrive after work. It is possible to remain in the club right through the evening.

Downstairs, couples look at each other over a drink in a very quiet French way. English speaking people are often uncomfortable in this situation but there is no need to be. Remember most of the women are bisexual. Couples go upstairs where the approaches are more direct. Everything is red. There is seating where you can observe. The lighting is dim. You are free to do what you want. Plenty of people speak very basic English. Try a few words in French, it helps.

One piece of advice, there are two sets of stairs. Go up the stairs at the far end of the bar. At the top, on the left there is a door to the showers. Go in and take two large towels before going into the main room.

Depending on the weekday, there can be 12 to 25 couples but there is always action. Weekend afternoons can be quieter but it always remains couples only.

Pay on leaving, additional drinks cost 11-15 euros. Most people go back.

- Le Nautilus, Monday to Fridays, 2 pm

- Moon City [sauna, jacuzzi] on Mondays and Wednesdays.
